About Lock Nut (Thin / Jam Nut)
A lock nut (thin nut or jam nut) is a low hex nut used as a second nut. Tighten it hard against the main nut, and the two lock each other on the thread.
Used on adjusting screws, tie rods, shafts and anywhere a spring washer or nylock nut does not suit.
