Screws for metal, wood, drywall and concrete
The right screw depends on what you are fixing into:
- Into a tapped hole or with a nut: machine screws, CSK or cheese head, star (Phillips) or slot drive, in MS zinc-plated and SS
- Into steel sheet and purlins: self drilling screws drill their own hole and tap the thread in one step; self tapping screws go into a pre-drilled hole
- Into gypsum board: black phosphate drywall screws with a bugle head that does not tear the paper
- Into wood: wood screws for general joinery and coach screws (hex head lag screws) for heavy timber
- Into brick and concrete: nylon hammer fix screws, a plug and screw that you tap in with a hammer
